Dr Charles Lapp, founder of the Hunter-Hopkins Center for chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia has recommended the following protocol of nutritional supplements: a multivitamin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, calcium, magnesium, D-ribose, DHEA, Lysine, fish oil, plus for the most severely ill he also recommends NADH and acetylcarnitine.[1]

A multivitamin[edit | edit source]

A multivitamin including B vitamin complex, folate (folic acid), vitamin D, and the minerals calcium and magnesium.

Vitamin B12[edit | edit source]

Vitamin B12 injections, which he believes helps boost energy in up to 80% of people with CFS or FM.

Vitamin D3[edit | edit source]

Dr Lapp recommends 2,000 units per day, stating that vitamin D3 reduces pain and morning stiffness, and "protects against stroke, heart attack and breast cancer," and promotes calcium absorption.

Calcium and Magnesium[edit | edit source]

Dr Lapp recommended 1,000mg to 1,500mg of calcium daily and 500-750mg magnesium daily.

Dr Lapp states magnesium is inappropriate for those with kidney disease and may cause diarrhea.

D-Ribose[edit | edit source]

Dr Lapp recommended 5000mg of D-ribose three times a day for two weeks, then 5000mg twice a day. Results are usually obvious within three weeks. D-ribose is used in cell metabolism and energy production, and has a very large effect on blood sugar levels. Do not take with blood thinner medications or supplements like CoQ10.

NADH and acetylcarnitine[edit | edit source]

NADH and acetylcarnitine are often taken together, and Dr Lapp only uses this for the most severely ill patients and those with the worst brain fog.

NADH[edit | edit source]

Dr Lapp recommends 10-20mg of NADH daily, which may take three to six months to work, with only a "subtle" response. NADH, also known as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, increases ATP production in mitochondria.

Acetylcarnitine[edit | edit source]

1,000mg acetylcarnitine twice a day is recommended by Dr Lapp to "improve cognition". Acetylcarnitine is also known as acetyl-L-carnitine. This is used with NADH to increase energy production.

DHEA[edit | edit source]

Dr. Lapp recommends DHEA doseage of 25-50mg daily (women), or 50-100mg daily (men). DHEA is also known as dehydroepiandrosterone.

Supplements of DHEA can help with energy levels and libido, according to Dr Lapp. He states that there are a range of unpleasant side effects, and that is not needed if a person is already taking estrogen and/or testosterone via hormone replacement therapy (HRT).[1]

Lysine[edit | edit source]

Dr Lapp recommends 1,000 - 2,000mg lysine daily to reduce herpetic mouth ulcers (mouth sores). Lysine is an essential amino acid.

Fish Oil[edit | edit source]

Fish oil doses of 3-4g per day is recommend by Dr Lapp to treat pain and to reduce cholesterol. Enteric-coated fish oil supplements will reduce fish odor when burping.[1]
