User talk:Kmdenmark/Separate Site Notices

From MEpedia, a crowd-sourced encyclopedia of ME and CFS science and history

Hi Karen! I realized that we can have separate site notices at the top of the screen for logged-in users and for non-logged-in users. This will be helpful if we want to distribute an urgent message to all contributors, but not have it be seen by the public. To do this, could you please:

  1. Copy the contents of user:Pyrrhus/Anonnotice to MediaWiki:Anonnotice (this will be the site notice for the public)
  2. Copy the contents of user:Pyrrhus/Sitenotice to MediaWiki:Sitenotice (this is where admins can place a notice to all contributors)

I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for letting me know. I need a lot of hand holding with programming. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Kmdenmark (talk) 13:17, 27 April 2019 (EDT)
Sure! What questions do you have? There shouldn’t be any programming involved. If we want to update one of the notices we simply update the page and then it should just be visible, maybe with a short time-lag. (Be sure to remove the initial hyphen from Anonnotice, I think the hyphen may mean ‘ignore this message’.)

And if you want to do a real-time chat on Slack, or even a phone call, just let me know!

Thank you for your generous offer. Many times I didn't realize I had a question or a need until a template was added that fixed it. I don't have any questions right now, but I would like your opinion about something.
What is your opinion on having the address coordinates on the clinician template? I don't like it. It's rarely fill in and I think the few who would use it for their GPS device probably have other resources to access it. One user suggested it and then it was never carried to completion. I'm always tempted to remove it, but then I think that maybe it's a generational thing and others would appreciate the info. What do you think?
I actually am not sure what the coordinates are for. I assumed it was for a google maps link or something like that. As a general rule, I think we have to make the article outlines as easy as possible for a new user to understand. If you and I are confused about this, then it may be too confusing for a new user. I say take it out. My 2 cents.

Oh, and by the way, if you ever want to see the “non-contributor site notice” at the top of the screen, simply log out of your MEpedia account and look at the top of the screen. If you then want to see the “contributor site notice” at the top of the screen, just clear the cookies in your browser, log back in to MEpedia, and look at the top of the screen!
As a reminder, we should probably:
  1. Remove the beginning hyphen (typo) from the “non-contributor site notice” at MediaWiki:Anonnotice
  2. Update the “contributor site notice” by copying the contents of user:Pyrrhus/Sitenotice to MediaWiki:Sitenotice
  3. Increase the number in MediaWiki:Sitenotice_id from "0" to "1". (This makes the site notice visible to logged-in users.)
As always, thanks so much for all your help!!!

Hi User:Kmdenmark! Do you want me to update the clinician template in MEpedia:Article outlines to get rid of the coordinates? I see that we will also have to fix the fallout from that template: Category:Pages_with_malformed_coordinate_tags! Great to see you ‘back’! Take care of yourself!

User:Pyrrhus Thank you! Happy to be back! I just made the changes you requested above. Please confirm they are correct. I would love to see the coordinates go away. It was an idea from a reader, but it didn't turn out to be as helpful as originally thought. Instead I felt it just looked like a blemish on the bio page. It's not a big priority, so only tackle it if and when you want. Thanks! Kmdenmark (talk) 12:29, June 6, 2019 (EDT)
Thanks, User:Kmdenmark! You copied it over perfectly! I recently learned why there is a push to include coordinates in pages- the new version of MediaWiki software will include a "Nearby" link, and clicking it brings up pages that are near you. (i.e. the software finds pages with coordinates that are near your computer's coordinates.) Obviously, we won't need that feature.
It just occurred to me that removing the coordinates would be a perfect test of the Special:ReplaceText page. Just search for the text "({{Coord|XX.XXXXX|YY.YYYYY|display=title}})", and replace it with an empty string "". This should fix the clinician template as well as all the pages with coordinate errors!
