The International Nonproprietary Name, abbr. INN, is an official name given to a pharmaceutical substance by the WHO. Typically, and in contrast to brand names, these generic names are used in most or all languages with only minor differences in spelling or pronounciation, e.g., english: paracetamol vs. paracétamol (french). This simplifies communication and reduces prescription errors.
