Cyanobacteria are bacteria that obtain their energy through photosynthesis. Cyanobacteria can produce neurotoxins, cytotoxins, endotoxins and hepatatoxins. Under certain conditions, cyanobacteria can rapidly produce to create an algae bloom that can have harmful health effects on animals and humans.

Cyanobacteria have been linked to clusters of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).[1][2]
