My suggestions are to check that the person is notable beyond simply use of social media accounts or common activities like signing petitions or raising awareness, and that they do not appear to be using a pseudonym and are likely to be comfortable with being named.

Consider if they are advocates in general, or activists campaigning for specific things.

Activists may be

  • giving regular interviews to journalists about activism
  • writing to scientific journals or rebutting poor quality ME research
  • creating petitions
  • engaging with key politicians or government advisors
  • organizing protests (rather than simply attending)
  • may have a specific role in ME charities
  • should be reasonably well known for their activism
  • information about their activism should be easy to find
  • make it clear of any have passed away or are very severely ill and unlikely to be contactable
