Jesper Mehlsen

From MEpedia, a crowd-sourced encyclopedia of ME and CFS science and history

Dr Jesper Mehlsen is a Danish clinician and researcher, and a member of the European ME Clinician Council (EMECC)[1] and was a research director at Frederiksberg Hospital from 2010-2018.[2][3] His primary area of specialist is the autonomic nervous system and complex diseases possibly resulting from HPV vaccine.[4] Autonomic nervous system dysfunction causes symptoms in many different bodily systems, affects blood pressure and heart rate and may lead to orthostatic intolerance, cognitive dysfunction, fainting, all of which are common symptom of ME/CFS.[5][6]

ME/CFS[edit | edit source]

Dr Mehlsen is a critical of the psychiatric / biopsychosocial treatment of ME/CFS and has advocated for it to be treated as a physical, neurological illness.[7] In 2019, Dr Mehlsen joined with many other clinicians and the patient group ME Foreningen in successfully calling for the Danish parliament to treat ME/CFS as a neurological illness with a biomedical basis rather than continuing to treat it as psychosomatic illness or functional disorder (medically unexplained symptoms),[8] and to use the World Health Organization's ICD classification. The group called upon the department of health to update it's information.[7]
