Idiopathic chronic fatigue

Idopathic chronic fatigue or ICF is long lasting chronic fatigue that is not caused by an underlying medical condition or psychiatric illness.[2] Patients with idopathic chronic fatigue do not fulfill the criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).[3] The word idiopathic reflects an unknown underlying cause, meaning that the chronic fatigue is a medically unexplained symptom.[2][4]

Differences from chronic fatigue syndrome[edit | edit source]

  • Idiopathic chronic fatigue is not a distinct illness or disease
  • Idiopathic chronic fatigue only requires the symptom of chronic fatigue[3]

Mitochondria are best known for their role in energy production, earning them the nickname "the powerhouse of the cell". Mitochondria also participate in the detection of threats and the response to these threats. One of the responses to threats orchestrated by mitochondria is apoptosis, a cell suicide program used by cells when the threat can not be eliminated.

chronic fatigue (CF) - Persistent and abnormal fatigue is a symptom, not an illness. It may be caused by depression, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or many other illnesses. The term "chronic fatigue" should never be confused with the disease chronic fatigue syndrome.
