First classification of myalgic encephalomyelitis as neurological - WHO ICD-8 publication[edit source | reply | new]

A number of academic texts cite two references for this:

International Classification of Diseases. Volume I 1969. pp. 158 and
International Classification of Diseases. Volume II, 1969. pp. 173

See WHO ICD-8 files Sometimes the first volume reference is given as 1967 (correct according to the WHO website and book publications) rather than 1969. After some investigation via the WHO website, other key sources and checking book ISBNs it appears that the ICD-8 was published in 1967, and only listed disease names and classification codes - and benign myalgic encephalomyelitis was not included - although under code 323 is encephalomyelitis - postinfectious (does not state viral/bacterial/parasitic etc); although it's possible there was an expanded / comprehensive edition but the page numbers given by others indicate that there was only one version in English. ICD-8 volume II was published in 1969 and clearly did include ME: Encephalomyelitis (chronic) myalgic, benign, again under code 323. Since this reference can be very clearly verified this is the best one to use. Notable sources in the ME/CFS using an ICD-8 reference including Frank Twisk, The Hummingbirds' Foundation for ME, Greg Crowhurst of Stonebird, Invest in ME Research, and Margaret of Mar (the Countess of Mar). notjusttired (talk) 14:50, 13 April 2019 (EDT)

WHO has removed the prefix “Benign” from “Benign myalgic encephalomyelitis” for ICD-11 and for the most recent release of ICD-10 (Version: 2019) -- Dx Revision Watch (talk) 11:35, August 16, 2021 (UTC) -- Dx Revision Watch (talk) 11:35, August 16, 2021 (UTC)[edit source | reply | new]

The text and reference for the WHO's International version of ICD-10 needs updating from Version 2016 to ICD-10 (Version: 2019) (which the WHO has said will be the final release in the life of ICD-10). For the 2019 release, the prefix "Benign" was removed.

Also the text and reference for ICD-11 needs updating to reflect the fact that the prefix "Benign" has now also been removed for ICD-11.

This document sets out the changes, dates of changes and links for ICD-10 (Version: 2019) and for the most recent release of ICD-11:
