How is this Category Browser maintained?[edit source | reply | new]

Is someone in charge of maintaining this category browser, or is it just supposed to reflect the current hierarchical structure of the categories as they currently stand? Is “Disease” supposed to be the topmost category?

Are categories supposed to be strictly hierarchical?[edit source | reply | new]

A truly hierarchical structure for categories would be wonderful. However, our current structure is not strictly hierarchical. For example, the page for “Heart palpitations” is in both the “Cardiac signs and symptoms” category as well as the “Signs and symptoms” category, despite the fact that “Cardiac signs and symptoms” is already a subcategory of “Signs and symptoms” category. If we wanted a strictly hierarchical structure, then “Heart palpitations” would be in the “Cardiac signs and symptoms” category, but not in the “Signs and symptoms” category. (Of course, pages could still be in two categories, showing up in two different parts of the hierarchy.)

I'm not aware of any particular rule on this. I've not seen it discussed before (been editing under a year). In some places things might be a bit untidy - perhaps because some pages were created before the relevant subcategories. Certain pages will be relevant to several categories - for instance some people will be in both a politicians category, and an advocates and allies category.
The MEpedia:Contents page is what I work from - renaming categories (eg for capitalization) can accidentally remove them and all areas should be accessible from the Contents page. Most content should also be reachable from one of the Portals of the main page in my view. I've recently asked for the new Ethics category to be added, which I don't think is anywhere under disease. There's also a Category:Core topics that doesn't seem linked to from anywhere. I also look for the Orphaned pages sometimes to see where they fit in. Thank you so much for the feedback, Njt! I hadn’t noticed the Category:Core topics page before- I have no idea how something might qualify as a “core topic”!?
