Natural killer cell function is a test of the ability of natural killer cells to lyse virally-infected cells, that is, to trigger them to undergo lysis and cell death. Natural killer cells are normal in number in myalgic encephalomyelitis patients but frequently are "low functioning" and unable to trigger cell death.^{[citation needed]}
