MTHFR is short for the enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. Sometimes MTHFR is also used when referring to the genes that transcribes methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. The enzyme catalyzes the conversion of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, which assists in the production of building blocks for DNA.
