'''FODMAP''' is an acronym (abbreviation) referring to '''F'''ermentable '''O'''ligosaccharides, '''D'''isaccharides, '''M'''onosaccharides '''a'''nd '''P'''olyols. These are complex names for a collection of osmotically active carbohydrates found in food that can be poorly absorbed by some people.<ref>{{Cite journal|title=Nutrition in the management of gastrointestinal diseases and disorders: the evidence for the low FODMAP diet|date=2017-12-01|url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1471489217301340|journal=Current Opinion in Pharmacology|volume=37|pages=151–157|last=Eswaran|first=Shanti|last2=Farida|first2=Jeremy P|last3=Green|first3=Jessica|last4=Miller|first4=Jesse D|last5=Chey|first5=William D|series=• Gastrointestinal • Endocrine and metabolic diseases|doi=10.1016/j.coph.2017.10.008|issn=1471-4892}}</ref>,<ref name="SHEP1">[http://shepherdworks.com.au/disease-information/low-fodmap-diet Shepherd Works - Low FODMAP Diet], ''Website''</ref> A Low FODMAP diet can improve symptoms of [[Irritable bowel syndrome|Irritable Bowel Syndrome]] (IBS).<ref name="SHEP1"/> ==Theory== The FODMAP molecules are poorly absorbed in the small intestine of the digestive tract. These molecules then continue their journey along the digestive tract, arriving at the large intestine, where they act as a food source to the bacteria that live there normally. The bacteria then digest/ferment these FODMAPs and can cause symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome include abdominal bloating and distension, excess wind (flatulence), abdominal pain, nausea, changes in bowel habits (diarrhoea, constipation, or a combination of both), and other gastro-intestinal symptoms.<ref name="SHEP1"/> ==Evidence== The majority of research on a low FODMAP diet has focused on managing the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). One study looked at people with both IBS and fibromyalgia and found that 77% of people indicated "satisfaction with the diet". In general, those who followed the diet were more likely to improve<ref>{{Cite journal|title=A low fermentable oligo-di-mono saccharides and polyols (FODMAP) diet reduced pain and improved daily life in fibromyalgia patients|date=October 2016|url=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28850525/|journal=Scandinavian Journal of Pain|volume=13|pages=166–172|last=Marum|first=Ana Paula|last2=Moreira|first2=Cátia|last3=Saraiva|first3=Fernando|last4=Tomas-Carus|first4=Pablo|last5=Sousa-Guerreiro|first5=Catarina|doi=10.1016/j.sjpain.2016.07.004|pmid=28850525|issn=1877-8879}}</ref>. Another study found that people with IBS and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome had greater improvements in digestive pain scores on a low FODMAP diet than control patients with IBS. <ref>{{Cite journal|title=Joint Hypermobility Syndrome Affects Response to a Low Fermentable Oligosaccharide, Disaccharide, Monosaccharide and Polyol Diet in Irritable Bowel Syndrome Patients: A Retrospective Study|date=Feb 2019|url=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30834032/|journal=Gastroenterology Research|volume=12|issue=1|pages=27–36|last=Fragkos|first=Konstantinos C.|last2=Keetarut|first2=Katie|last3=Cox|first3=Anna|last4=Eady|first4=Johanna|last5=Emmanuel|first5=Anton V.|last6=Zarate-Lopez|first6=Natalia|doi=10.14740/gr1133|pmc=6396789|pmid=30834032|issn=1918-2805}}</ref> No studies have been done specifically on ME.
