The hit and run hypothesis is the hypothesis that myalgic encephalomyelitis is can be triggered by an infection and then maintained by some ongoing disease process long after the immune system has eradicated that initial infection. This is in contrast to the persistent infection hypothesis, which holds that the symptoms of ME are maintained by one or more active or smoldering infections.
