Digestive problems or gastrointestinal symptoms are common in ME/CFS. These include abdominal pain, constipation, cough, development of allergies and intolerances (including alcohol intolerance and food sensitivities), diarrhea, dysbiosis, dysphagia (problems swallowing), dyspepsia (indigestion), esophageal spasms, gas, heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), increased appetite, leaky gut, loss of appetite, nausea, reflux, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), sore throat, and tenesmus.
Prevalence
- 2001, In a Belgian study, 81.8% of patients meeting the Fukuda criteria and 85.6% of patients meeting the Holmes criteria, in a cohort of 2073 CFS patients, reported gastrointestinal disturbance.[1]
