Convalescence refers to either the gradual recovery of health after disease, illness or surgery, or the period of time between illness and recovering to full health.[1][2] To convalesce means to grow stronger.[2]

Traditionally, the period of convalescence depended on the length and severity of the illness, and involved a combination of:

  • rest, often including some strict bed rest
  • exercise
  • nutrition
  • often a change of scenery was involved, such as a convalescent home or a stay at a spa[2]
