Biomedical engineering

From MEpedia, a crowd-sourced encyclopedia of ME and CFS science and history

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field that uses engineering concepts to pursue biological and medical research.[1] Biomedical engineering can aid biomedical research.[2]

Notable studies[edit | edit source]

A study by the Open Medicine Foundation including engineers and biomedical researchers used nanotechnology to create a very small nano-needle that could test blood samples of ME/CFS for the presence of post-exertional malaise by measuring responses when applying a biochemical stress test, including how mitochondria from ME/CFS patients responded compared to samples from healthy people.[3] The idea was to create a new, inexpensive device that could be mass-produced in order to cost-effectively and accurately diagnose ME/CFS patients from a simple blood sample. The technology is still being refined and tested before large scale manufacturing can take place.[3]
