Focusing on the present increases psychological flexibility, as it does not restrict interpretations and actions based on what happened in the past or what might happen in the future. According to ACT, searching for possible explanations of why something happened and ruminating about ''what if'' realities, are often unhelpful in working out psychological problems.<ref name="Hayesbook" />
